Sloth, is the last “sin”, in our series Re-Imagining the Seven Deadly Sins. I was pleased to know that there was going to be a cute little animal I could research. This part of the project took longer than I had imagined because I fell in love with these adorable creatures. They don’t really sleep that much but they are very relaxed and happy to spend their time enjoying their life. An interesting fact, that I learned, is that they have up to three extra vertebrae which enables them to turn their necks up to 270 degrees in either direction. This allows them to see danger approaching from almost anywhere. A powerful and needed gift, for the peaceful sloth.
I can’t tell you how many times I heard, “idle hands are the devil’s playground”. Which is understandable when you pair it with churches that are wanting you to tithe 10% of your earnings. The busier you are the more money you make, leading the church to also make more money. We hope that means the hungry will be feed, more homeless sheltered, and more women and children being taken care of. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case all you have to do is look at the MEGA churches popping up all over the place.
When I ask a client to set aside time that is just for her I hear, “I am SOOOOO busy!”
Busy has become our badge of honor. We rush and rush about and I often ask for what? All of us have seasons in our life where we are legitimately busy. But often that “busy” when broken down is a sign of an inability to mange our lives. What do I mean when I say that? What I mean is, we simply don’t prioritize our time and resources well and we don’t say “NO”. We do not honor our time. Instead we wear “busy” as a badge of honor. After all, doesn’t that make us sound important! And if we aren’t busy than we are being unproductive and lazy.
What I tell them is that “busy” is not a virtue, nor is it something that will earn you respect, at least not with me. What does earn my respect is someone who uses and values their time. Here is how I do that:
- Stop Using The Word “BUSY”
YOUR WORDS MATTER!!!
Your words are like magnets, they attract things into your life, good and bad. What you think, speak and focus on manifest. Find creative and positive wording.
“I am slaying my life right now.”
“I have an abundance of things that I love and they fill my days.”
“I am healing”
YOUR WORDS MATTER SO MAKE THEM COUNT!
- Cut The Crap
Sometimes our lives are really full, but a lot of the time we are spending our time not being productive. I can’t be great at everything so I don’t spend time on things I am not amazing at. Activity doesn’t mean you are being productive. I don’t have a lot of knickknacks because I don’t want to spend my life cleaning. I have a lot of underwear because I don’t want to have to laundry all the time. Examine your life and see where you can cut things out. Learn the art of saying “NO”.
STOP BEING A PEOPLE PLEASER!
If you don’t rest you will burn out! When I feel like I have overrun my schedule I take time off and I don’t apologize. I love my job! I learned really quick that I had to make relaxation a priority in order to rejuvenate. I cannot offer my best when I haven’t rested.
RESTING IS GOOD USE OF YOUR TIME!
- Ask Better Questions
“Why am I so busy?”
“Why can’t I relax?”
“Why does everyone else get to go and do what they want?”
THESE ARE CRAPPY QUESTIONS!
These questions put you in the victim mode and out of the hero mode. Our lives run better, we feel physically better, and we are filled with more joy when we are the hero’s of our stories!
BETTER QUESTIONS GET BETTER RESULTS!
“What are my priorities?”
“What will bring me the most joy?”
“I need help, who can I ask?”
- Make Peace With Your Inner Sloth
Be flexible, turn your head around, and survey your surroundings.
Who is uplifting you?
Who is hindering you?
By making peace with the sloth you also are able to tap into some of the amazing abilities this animal has. Moving your head all the way around enables you to see what is coming. Are the people and things in your life bringing you joy and peace? Are you being your own best friend and resting when you need to. By doing this you are able to see where you are in best service to yourself and others. Sloths take time to take it all in.
DON’T BE IN SUCH A HURRY THAT YOU MISS YOUR LIFE!
YOU HAVE ONE VERY PRECIOUS LIFE!
