One of the most life changing practices, I have incorporated into my day is to start taking 15 minutes of silence everyday. This is not easy for someone who has 2 kids, 2 cats, and 3 dogs at home. There are piles of laundry to clean, work with the VA to do, and a business to run. I can find a million reasons why I don’t have the time to get into silence. In fact, it is only in the last 6 months that I have made this a priority in my day, and only in the last 2 months that I have been really faithful doing it. I am a slow learner, so I would meditate one day and then not the other. I don’t meditate well. At least when I try to meditate like my friends or how I read you should do it in books. My mind is a zoo. There is a blog named that down in the achieves, if you want to know more about that.
For years, I tried to follow the guidelines of what I thought meditation was suppose to look like. This doesn’t work with me. I spend 15 minutes thinking why can’t my mind shut up and I end those 15 minutes stressed and annoyed. So, I went on a search to find out what I was doing wrong and to fix it.
Let me start by saying the position of your body when you are in silence / meditating, does not matter. You will not find me meditating with a straight spine sitting on a pillow. That is great for the people who can but for me this doesn’t work.
What does work for me, is this:
Five days a week, I meditate in the sauna at my gym. The other two days of the week or on days when I can’t get to the gym. I head upstairs to my room and get all snuggled up in my bed, creating a cocoon of my blankets and meditate there.
The other thing is I asked my tribe how did they meditate? One of them said well, my Guru said do it this way. This only created more questions, what was a Guru? I was raised in the Christian faith so I didn’t fully understand the word Guru.
If you are like me here is how Merriam-Webster defines Guru :
1 : a personal religious teacher and spiritual guide in Hinduism
2 a : a person that is generally recognized as a leader or teacher b : a person with knowledge and expertise
The next time I was meditating I decided to try something new. I tried listening to my heart. The word Guru kept coming to me over and over. It was then that I learned how to meditate. For me, it wasn’t about empting my mind but rather about silencing my mind and listening to my heart.
The heart speaks softer than the head. You have to get really quiet and still to hear it. This realization has changed how I meditate. That isn’t the biggest change though. When I started entering those 15 minutes of silence with the intention to listen to the wisdom of my heart, my life changed. How I love people and how I receive love from people, changed. Synchronicity became the normal state of my day, instead of a rare occurrence. In fact, that is why my 15 minutes are now my favorite time of day, and sometimes those 15 minutes become 30. My day and in turn my life, is created in those 15 minutes of listening to the wisdom of my heart.
So my recommendation to you this week is to implement 15 minutes a day to listen to your heart. There is no wrong or right way to do this. Just get really quiet and see what your heart is trying to tell you. Your heart is ready, willing, and excited to be your Guru.
