If you’re like most people, January goes something like this: You choose something that you want to change about YOU! YOU decided that this year is going to be different; YOU will be different. Thus begins the arduous task of seeing all your flaws and finding ways to “fix” them. By February, all of those “resolutions” you have made have been broken at least a handful of times and you are disgusted by yourself and now have something you can beat yourself up for the next year.
That is why last year I decided that I was going to do things a little different. I was going to CREATE my life. I decided to do this by picking one word that I wanted the year ahead to emulate. The process of picking my word has become a sacred practice. It was no longer just a word it would become my mantra, my guiding star. I spend weeks finding just the right word. When faced with choices in the coming year, I will ask does this lead me closer to or further away from my word, my mantra? Once my word has been located I try to find things with that word on it. I surround myself with reminders of what I want to achieve this year. I like to find jewelry, notebooks, large coffee, mugs, pictures, songs, and this year I even found a quote to carry me through the year!
MY MANTRA FOR 2016:
Merriam-Webster defines adventure as:
- an undertaking usually involving danger and unknown risks
- the encountering of risks <the spirit of adventure>
- an exciting or remarkable experience <an adventure in exotic dining>
- an enterprise involving financial risk
For a recovering Type A personality who loves security and the well-known when this word revealed itself to me I fought it for about two weeks. That’s the funny thing about this process, the word chooses you as much as you chose it.
MY QUOTE FOR 2016:
MY SONG FOR 2016:
In the coming weeks, months, and year ADVENTURE will guide my direction. Where it will lead is a mystery and I cannot wait to discover all the ADVENTURES that lay ahead.
