So it is 6 o’clock on Blog Wednesday and I am just starting my blog. Why? Because this has been an extremely busy week both emotionally and physically. My baby son just turned 14 and I am finishing up a business deal. So, I knew that I would have to write this blog early this morning but the universe had other plans. A MIGRAINE!!! Because who doesn’t like waking up at 5am with some invisible person making scrambled eggs with a metal mixer in their head, on an already busy week.
So blog writing was going to have to wait until the drum team left my skull. Finally, at around 11:30 my brain was clearing up enough that I thought okay, now you can get to writing. That was until my sons asked me if we could have a movie day. Now, let me tell you that my sons are 14 and 18 and they are usually so busy that to get them still for 2 minutes much less 2 hours is a miracle or the flu. According to them, today felt like a day made for eating Chinese food in bed and watching movies all day. My first thought was NO WAY! I have work I have to do. Then I looked into my youngest son’s face and thought they will grow up and move away, you should enjoy this while you can. But I still felt pulled in two different directions.
This is when I stopped and went to my Top Three. What is the Top Three? The Top Three is my top three priorities. So what are my priorities?
Here there are in order:
My Kids & Husband
That’s it. Now, that list can move around a little based on what may or may not be going on in my life but whenever faced with adding anything to my schedule, like volunteering or accepting an invitation to work or play I ask will it negatively impact my Top Three. If the answer is yes than my answer is no.
Three years ago there was no list and if there had been I sure as heck wouldn’t have been on it. Now I am right up there in the number 1 spot and loving it. I can tell you that if I don’t put my health first, number 2 or 3 will suffer. I also have priorities 4,5,6, etc. as everyone does but the top two NEVER change. I also give myself grace. There are weeks where I will have to do a little rearranging with any priority below 1. There are weeks where I am jammed packed with clients and work so I make sure that my family has everything they need done in advance.
So with my Top Three list in mind my decision was easy, today would be movie day. I slipped back into my pajamas, turned on my Amazon Instant Video, found a movie to rent, ordered Chinese food and settled in for a day of movies. I think my daughter must have gotten some cosmic vibe because she showed up and we watched an episode of Being Mary Jane.
My day literally followed my Top Three. In the morning I took care of my health, in the midday I spent time with my family and this evening I am finishing up my work. It all worked out just fine, in fact I might just say it was the BEST DAY EVER!!!!
