I see you because I am you. At the age of 14 I fell in love with a wonderful boy in my hometown. This boy had huge aspirations and dreams. One of those dreams was to be a soldier, so off he went to follow his dreams.
Little did he know that those dreams would lead him to the battlefield.
Upon his return form Desert Storm, I became pregnant and married that soldier. No one told me that little boys who become men during the heat of battle come back with different needs and hurts. I had to learn how to navigate those hurts alone.
Fast forward 17 years and meet our beautiful amazing smart Seth.
Seth was Eric’s sister Anna’s son. From the moment I started dating Eric I knew he would be a wonderful father because I saw how much he loved Seth. That love was returned by a little boy who wanted to grow up and be just like his Uncle. This included joining the Army and eventually going off to war.
This is where Eric and Seth’s story divides. Seth never got to come home. Seth was killed by an IED on December 17th, 2006. I cannot tell you the devastation that followed Seth’s death. The tears, screams, and silence that I thought we would never heal from. My husband gave Seth’s eulogy and he said, “He’s a great hero. He showed us all how to live harder, love deeper and laugh louder.”
Seth was going to come home and get a tattoo with his brother that said Totus Virium, it means Undivided Strength. Since Seth was unable to do that Nathan and my husband did. On my sons 18th birthday he too got the tattoo. These two words have come to symbolize everything our family stands for.
Who I am today, the paths I have taken are in large part to Eric and Seth. I always knew that my life work would be to do something to honor Sethers.
Here is my offer:
I have named this gift, Totus Virium.
